Getting Lost to Find Ourselves

All that stands between us and our happiness are the illusions and ideals that we accept as fact and truth. The constructs that we dedicate so much time and energy towards progressing towards are the exact things that leave us feeling unsatisfied.

Often times, our personal aims and objectives are exact byproducts of the environment in which we grew up. And as we age, we quickly decide what we like and what is important to us by a process of elimination – a process that contains a ridiculously small amount of options and variables.

This is at no fault of our own. Very few of us were ever encouraged to venture off into the unknown, or to allow ourselves to wander aimlessly. From our earliest years we were taught to believe that action without intention was pointless, and that having a clear and defined path was noble and desirable course of action.

Reflection on this “truth” tends to occur much later in life. When action becomes routine and routine leads to boredom, we question why we began on the path we are on. We ask ourselves what end we are working towards, and what it will actually change in our lives.

Rather than following the well-trodden pathway to no end, the much sought-after excitement and joy of life can be found when we let go of the plans we have married ourselves to. When we allow ourselves to drop out of the pack and take a new look at the race we’re running.

These moments of nervous energy and uncertainty end up being the things that can transform the way we see the world and the way we interact with it. In losing ourselves and letting go of our purpose, we find our place in the world.

That place, wherever it may be, is exactly where you should be. That place is home.
