How many times do we change course, rearrange priorities, or bail out of our plans when something falls through? When even the smallest detail shifts, we jump to justify why its absence warrants a complete and total abandonment of prior set plans.
Whether used as a reason to excuse oneself from an undesirable activity, or as a proxy for some hidden self-doubt or dependency, we use change as a reason to quit.
In very few situations is the latter case valid. The human spirit is far stronger than any of us recognize, and in our avoidance of discomfort, we rarely discover the true potential to overcome obstacles that we all possess.
If, instead of quitting whenever our surrounding conditions are anything but perfect, we practiced pushing through the imperfect and making the most of every situation, the limits of what we could accomplish would astound us.
There are many instances when better planning is the simplest solution to the problems that arise in our lives, but there will inevitably be unforeseeable events that appear in front of us at various times. Even in those moments, one changing variable should not stand between us and the task at hand. Digging deep, summoning courage, and setting forth despite the less-than-ideal conditions, we can discover another level of internal tolerance and fortitude, and enable ourselves to solve problems of increasing difficulty over time.
The willingness to go against the odds and take on the unexpected is a trait that can help us past obstacles of all varieties in life. The attitude of “whatever happens, I can handle” is what sets a select batch of people apart from the rest of the population, and is really what drives our sense of self-belief, which holds an incredible amount of weight in determining what we can accomplish.
One variable does not break us, and certainly does not define us. Dare to challenge assumptions and the status quo, and take a chance on life. You’re more powerful than you know.
