The future is always uncertain, and that’s a good thing. While comfort and lack of surprises may provide us with a sense of security, they ultimately keep us exactly where we are—a position that in time will inevitably become to feel stale.
When we look over long periods of time, it’s the uncomfortable situations and jumping into the unknown that provide us with the greatest thrills and the largest opportunities for growth and perspective.
The cost we incur with a life like this is fear and uncertainty. We worry that the future won’t go as well as the past has, or maybe we’re scared that things will take a drastic turn for the worse if we don’t prepare for what’s ahead. This cost, at least I think, cannot be the determinant of what we pursue. We’ll never know the difference between a fictitious and legitimate obstacle if we don’t throw ourselves at it.
Despite the angst that can arise from an uncertain future, we can take solace in knowing that we’ve made it this far. While change is constant, the principles that underlie our success and happiness are also constant in their applicability.
If we conduct ourselves on a basis of what is truly best for us and those around us, shunning exterior motives, we are left with a simple choice: to fret for the future or to let go and acknowledge the futility of this angst. There will always be a future and it will always be uncertain; we may as well enjoy what’s happening right now and allow for the unexpected to enter our life. And when the unexpected comes, all that will be required is a willing “yes”.
