When it comes to what truly matters in life, there is no final destination outside of this moment. Life doesn’t just “get better” and we don’t become happier when something in the external world changes. True, lasting happiness can only come as a result of diving into each moment of your life and recognizing that what you experience there is all there is; for the time being, there is no other life but this.
By definition, we keep ourselves from reaching this destination because we always believe it to be years ahead or, at best, just around the corner. This doesn’t mean we can’t be excited for plans in the future, but it does mean that we can’t delay our happiness until then.
Life does not have a final destination; there is only what is here right now, and it is enough.
“There are two ways to wash dishes: One is to wash them in order to make them clean; the other is to wash them in order to wash them.”
— Anthony de Mello
