We all have a tendency to make decisions with an overarching assumption that things will stay as they are. Logically and rationally, we know that the world will change and things will look different in time, especially considering the exponential technological curve we now see, but it’s almost as if we allow those thoughts to drift into the back of our mind when it comes time to make a lasting, emotional decision.
We simply don’t know what the future will look like, and that’s alright. What matters is that we are willing to, as Jim Collins would put it, “confront the brutal facts of reality, whatever they may be” as we navigate through life.
Instead of spending all our energy on trying to predict and conceptualize how people will act and events will play out, we should instead focus on ourselves – building resiliency and perseverance to take on life’s unexpected events when they arise.
Shifting this focus also means letting go of existing, transient things. How much of our current day-to-day will look the same in five, or even just two, years? How about our friends, our family, our city – how will those all change?
When the time comes where major change rocks our boat, live a life that isn’t dependent on external factors. Live a life without worry and restriction, where dreams become reality and the nightmare of stagnation fades away.
