Chasing Fear

When confronted with an uncertain situation, we can come up with a million reasons why not to do something, why not to take a risk. Whatever the fear may be – failure, opportunity cost, judgement, etc. – we typically find a way to sell ourselves against doing something.

As we make a habit of coming up with lists of consequences, our decision making shifts. Rather than viewing the world through an opportunistic lens, we default to indecision and a status quo mode of being.

If we instead make the conscious choice to say “yes” to things, most of our reasons against doing something disappear. Our illusions drop, worries subside, and anxieties withdraw.

When we’re truly honest with ourselves, the things we should do and the things we should avoid become much more clear. After all, what we fear doing most is usually what we most need to do.
